From the Desk of Fr. John Nickolai

I’d like to begin by thanking everyone for continuing to cooperate with the safety measures in place at the parish. Public Masses resumed about one month ago. It has been edifying to see how readily the people of this parish have adapted to our changed circumstances. I know there is some measure of inconvenience and discomfort involved, and even some real deprivation, as we are still going without many of the usual things. My own impression is that there has been a largely positive spirit about the whole matter, and I am grateful for that.

It’s been a source of joy, as well, to be able to celebrate the sacred liturgy with a congregation. At the same time, I am aware of not seeing some of the familiar faces yet, or not seeing them as often, but I know that’s because many of you are being cautious. That is to be commended as well. Really, my impression of the whole situation is that people are largely making good use of their own common sense in weighing risks and benefits, and taking steps to protect themselves.

It’s worth noting as well that the faithful here have continued to be generous with their offerings. Thank you for that, especially in a time of such uncertainty. We had a graduation ceremony for our eighth grade this week. It was a more subdued affair than usual, of course, but here also I was impressed by our students. It would have been easy to focus only on what they missed out on this year, but they demonstrated a great spirit of joy and gratitude. Pray for them as they begin high school this fall.
